A 43-year-old Ifeoma Ogbonna and 40-year-old Uchechi Nwosu, who claim
to be prophetesses, were on Thursday arraigned before the Apapa Senior
Magistrate Court in Lagos state for allegedly defrauding Jane Chukwu,
an entrepreneur, ofN600,000.
Ogbonna and Nwosu, who live in Orile-Iganmu, Lagos, allegedly took
money from Chukwu, with promises to increase her wealth through their
divine powers.
The prophetesses currently face charges of collecting money under
false pretences, theft and conspiracy.
Friday Inedu, the prosecutor, told the court that the accused persons
committed the offence on July 25, 2013, around Coker Bridge area of
Orile-Iganmu.
Inedu said the duo met Chukwu and asked her give them her aN100,000
gold necklace andN500,000 cash so that they would pray for her to
become rich.
The accused persons also said they would use the money to buy some
spiritual oils and other ingredients for the prayers, to "liberate her
from the external forces working against her progress".
The businesswoman, who could not see any changes as promised by the
prophetesses, reported the matter to the police.
Both Ogbonna and Nwosu pleaded not guilty to the charges and Senior
Magistrate Adeyemi Amos granted them bail atN200,000 each, with
sureties in like sum.
Adeyemi Amos went on to state that the sureties would be expected to
show proof that they were tax payers in Lagos state, and scheduled the
next hearing for November 13.
