Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice for Real Madrid in their second leg UEFA Champions League last 16, game against Schalke on Tuesday, March 10 to set a new record for goals in European competition with 78.
Ronaldo notched up his 77th and 78th goals in Europe and put himself above former Real Madrid team-mate Raul and Barcelona's Lionel Messi.
The Portuguese international is also level with Messi as the joint record all-time goalscorer in the Champions League proper - with 75 goals apiece in Europe's elite competition.
Ronaldo’s first goal came in the 25th minute when his head met a corner by Tony Kroos cancelling out an opener for the Germans by Christian Fuchs five minutes earlier and equalled the record of 77, held by former Real striker Raul.
He was on had to equalise for the current European champions with his 78th European goal in all after Klaas Jan Huntelaar had restoreed Schalke’s lead.
That goal also got him level with Lionel Messi with Champions League total of 75.
