Ahead of the judgement in his long-running corruption trial which will be delivered today, former minister of Aviation and campaign spokesman for former President Goodluck Jonathan on reportedly stormed a 5-star Wheatbaker Hotel in Lagos with 15 heavily armed policemen on Tuesday.
His arrival with the fierce-looking police officers drawn from the anti-riot unit of the Nigeria police force was said to have caused panic and triggered anxiety today when he arrived at the hotel.
Customers of the hotel located at 4 Onitolo Road (former Lawrence Road) in Ikoyi, an upscale area of Lagos, panicked at the sight of the police officers. Some of the hotel’s expatriate guests reportedly made frantic calls to their embassies as the armed policemen entered the hotel’s reception area and started acting in a manner that was deemed intimidating.
It is not immediately clear, the motive behind his visit to the hotel, but sources said it may not be unconnected with the judgement on his corruption trial to be delivered today.
Mr. Fani-Kayode’s is facing trial in a two counts of money laundering and corrupt enrichment.
Mr. Fani-Kayode showed up at the hotel twice with the same contingent of policemen within a spell of 30 minutes, a Nigerian visiting from the US who is residing in the hotel said.
It was learnt that the court building in Ikoyi is a walking distance from the Wheatbaker Hotel.
It took the intervention of the management of the hotel to convince Mr. Fani-Kayode to tell his armed guards to leave the reception area.
